Battling the Killer Within & Winning

Battling the Killer Within and Winning: Hopes, Prayers, and Treatments for a Prostate Cancer Cure

by Thomas Farrington (November 3, 2004)

Men are in a raging battle with prostate cancer with nearly 200,000 in the U.S. alone diagnosed with this disease each year. Each diagnosis brings a sense of fear and hopelessness that must be overcome in order to select the proper treatment. This book is an insightful account of the experiences of the author and 19 other men in treatment with him as they face prostate cancer.

Reviews

In a very real way I believe that Battling the Killer Within helped to save my life. It was Tom’s book that moved me to take action which I would not have done otherwise. The book motivated me to request a biopsy, which my urologist felt was unnecessary. Eventually he agreed to do a biopsy for my peace of mind. We were both surprised to find I had a prostate cancer diagnosis. Thank God for Battling the Killer Within.
— Roderick Ireland, Prostate Cancer Survivor

This book had to be written! Men, particularly African America men, must be knowledgeable about the risk of and treatments for prostate cancer. Battling the Killer Within is a must read; for every African American man (and woman)! As a survivor of prostate cancer, PHEN gives me an avenue to help other men face this disease successfully. I along with the other survivors working with PHEN are committed to increasing awareness and helping save lives throughout Greater Boston.

About Thomas Farrington

Thomas A. Farrington is a five-year prostate cancer survivor. When he was diagnosed with cancer in 2000, at the age of 56, he described himself as being completely uninformed about the disease and his extremely high-risk level due to his family history.

After choosing a treatment that took him away from his home in Concord, Massachusetts, Mr. Farrington continued to study prostate cancer and decided that his experience facing the disease along with the experiences of other men in treatment with him could help men that would follow them along the journey of hope to beat prostate cancer. In 2001, he released Battling The Killer Within, a book that profiled the experiences of himself and nineteen men in treatment with him.

Following the release of Battling The Killer Within, which became a nationally acclaimed book, Mr. Farrington was a featured speaker at numerous events, and he conducted prostate health workshops and seminars around the country. In 2003, he founded the Prostate Health Education Network, Inc. This is a Boston, Massachusetts based non-profit organization focused on the prostate education and awareness needs of African American men. He also serves on the board of directors for the Massachusetts prostate Cancer Coalition.
